Scurfpea is a native perennial legume in the prairie. Scurfpea is in the Fabaceae family which is characteristic of legumes. Legumes are dry, two-valved fruits. Scurfpea can be recognized by its structure, most of the stems are found at the top half of the plant. It has gray-green foliage. The inflorescence has small light blue, purple or rarely white flowers.
It flowers from June to September. It is mostly found in small populations or scattered throughout the prairie. When young, the herbage is grazed by livestock, but as the plant matures the palatability decreases and its forage value is considered poor. It is readily consumed when cured in hay.
Northern bobwhite and wild turkey eat the legumes.
Native Americans used the leaves, stems and roots to make tea.
