Storms

Storms in the prairie are a magnificent sight to see. They can be viewed from a long distance. Storms bring strong winds, a lot of rain, lightning and thunder.

Rain provides water for plants, wildlife and livestock. It also fills ponds and streams in the prairie. Nearly everything residing in the prairie needs water to survive.

Lightning starts prairie fires. Most fires in the prairie today are prescribed fires. However, some prairie fires are still started by lightning. Historically, the prairie depended on fires started by lightning.
